Initially the canyon only contained modest beach houses. In the 1930's, it began to acquire serious examples of Modern design by Richard Neutra, Harwell H. Harris and others. After 1945 other prime examples of high art Modernism were built. The old canyons attracted a varied coterie, from the Uplifters to Will Rogers, Thomas Mann, Bertold Brecht, Walker Evans, Christopher Isherwood, Aldous Huxley, Emil Ludwig, Johnnie Weismuller, and many other worthies.
